Custom Color Discussion

Hello everyone!

The original thread that HerrAardy created (Custom Color Ideas and Information) has completely derailed from the original purpose. It was posted so that Bad Dragon Staff members (mainly our Production department) could post information and ideas about what colors work well together, as well as to share pictures of interesting toys that have been manufactured.

I've split off and locked the original thread for the time being until Aardy and I are able to revisit it and get it back on track. The remainder of the thread was also split off and locked; it can still be found right here.

Any further non-Staff discussion of custom colors, mockups, ideas and suggestions can take place in this thread. Following are some guidelines that need to be followed.

What this thread is for:
  • If you'd like to bounce ideas for custom colors off of other community members, you're in the right place!
  • If you'd like to post pictures of interesting toys that you've received, you're in the right place!
  • If you're looking for someone to help mock up a picture of a toy you want to order, you're in the right place!

What this thread is not for:
  • "What Staff member made my toy?"
  • "Can _____ Staff member make my toy"
-These questions will not be answered; we cannot honor requests for specific Staff members to make specific toys.

  • "Staff member _____, what do you think of this color scheme?"
-While everyone loves to give feedback when possible, time constraints to not allow for us to do so on a consistent basis. These questions will likely go unanswered.

  • "Can Bad Dragon make my toy in _______ color?"
  • "Is it possible to get a toy in ______ configuration?"
-While you can ask other community members for curiosity's sake, please be aware that Bad Dragon's Staff has the absolute final say on what is and is not possible. The only way to confirm what colors are and are not possible is to send in a ticket. The unfortunate truth is that there is a lot of misinformation about what is and is not possible that we can only clear up if we are asked. We're well aware of how disappointing it can be to find out your dream color isn't possible. By you contacting us, and sending in a ticket, we aim to minimize the disappointment that can happen from "I read on the Forums..."

We greatly appreciate everyone's help in keeping the Forums full of relevant, interesting, accurate, and useful information.

Now go, my community members, unleash your color discussion upon the internet! Just keep the guidelines in mind.

Thank you,
-Audax, Community Administrator

Yay, I was waiting for this to reopen. I've ticketed for a definitive answer on my specific, pressing questions, but in general, I'd love to know more about translucency. The translucent toys I've seen usually have a shiny quality I really like, but I want to know how it tends to affect the color.

Additionally, I saw a custom the other day that had a fade from a pale yellow green to a pink base with a lovely orange in the middle. I gasped and said, "ALRAUNE!" See, I would like to eventually get the Breeder in green because it reminds me of vine tentacles. Having seen that toy, I am now in love with the idea of either a split or fade reminiscent of an alraune, often depicted as the upper body of a plant girl rising from a large pink or red blossom (a google image search for "alraune monster girl" will bring up some examples).

The challenge here is that I wanted more of an emerald green than a yellow green. A split makes this easy -- I can have whatever colors I like. However, I looove fades, and I really liked that orange in the middle. Does anyone know of shades of green and pink/reddish pink that would at least somewhat alleviate the muddy area in between? For example, could something like this come out with that slight orangey or tealish area in between, or would it be 10 times muddier in real life?

And if anyone is better at making mockups and wants to give it a go (I'm just using PDN right now... no alphas, just multiply... gotta get my art programs reinstalled x3), I'd love to see them.

I am not a cocksmith and I don't know much about silicone, but I do know about pigments, having made my own cosmetics and paints. I'm not sure how easy it would be to include blue or orange in this color scheme, so I would just go with a fade from the green to pink/red. Light, being transparent as opposed to opaque pigment, ”blends” more easily, so although a fade may look great on the screen, it's not as easy to accomplish with pigments, especially complementary colors. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complementary_colors)

This is what I came up with to try and avoid the swampy area between the red & green with a slightly lighter color between to accommodate the color shift. Good luck!

Oh, to clarify, "orange" and "teal" was just my way of trying to describe what's going on between the green and the red in my first picture (orangey) and the green and the pink in my second picture (dark mint is a closer descriptor than teal, maybe?). I don't want to add them to the scheme independently of what happens between color A and color B.

Yeah, complementary colors definitely cause issues, thus my wondering whether real pigments could actually generate the same effect without being much lighter. As they are in my mockups, I think they look okay, but if that's not what's going to happen IRL... xD

I really like those mockups though. Thank you! :D For fades, if adding another a third color increases the cost (my guess is probably :P), I might just have to go with a split to keep the price from getting out of control, but that really looks good. If I can afford it, I'll go with something like that.

Oi, stop me. If you remember from the old thread, I was playing with different Elden ideas.
Well, I thought I was set on what I wanted for my custom, but then I played around with it a little more and don't know what I want anymore - again.

I'm considering this for a tail, though I'm not sure yet how possible it is:

Though please persuade me into making a decision by telling me what you like best ._.

Oh gosh, I'm having the same dilemma. I'm going to probably buy an Elden and possibly add a Winston on my next paycheck as it's right on the tail end of the sale (... unintentional puns follow me around).

I really like fades on Eldens; I'll probably go with a blue to purple fade myself. I'm not sure whether I like your first option or your third option more! I'll put my vote in for the third because sherbety toys are awesome.

Also, that Winston would be GORGEOUS! Metallic, highlighted Winstons with a stripe are my favorites to the extent that it's the sole reason I want a Winston. UV under metallic sounds like it would look great if it can be done. I'm very interested in how metallic pigment mixes with other things. In my recent ticket, I asked if metallic and translucent could possibly combined.

Judging by how indecisive I've been so far, I may be ordering by the end of the sale as well. Though I hope not, because I don't want to be at the end of the queue :( I was wanting a fade, but then I did the blue/orange marble, and now I'm not sure. Though I think I'm more stuck between that and the pink/orange fade now. Thanks for the vote! It's got me between only two now.

Thanks, I think it would be too!! :D It seems like it should work, and I'm anxiously awaiting an answer from staff (through ticket). Man, I really hope so, because I learned that adding metallic to UV colors negates the reactivity... so, fingers are crossed :tinfoil:. Hope you get your answer soon as well!

Someone on the old thread was curious about a lime green and dark brown split marbled Xar. Something like this maybe?

Never really considered the Elden, BUT those colors are making me think about it! I especially like the blue and orange marble, and the pink to orange fade. I think the tail will end up looking pretty damn good too!

Same here, until I heard all these rave reviews about him. The sale happening to pop up after I got tempted into wanting one was definitely a sign! I'm thinking I may go with the marble, since I can't think of any other model that would look quite as good with that coloration... while the fade would look good on almost anything. Thanks! I'm so excited for the tail!!

I came up with some other pink/orange fades for other models:
Just realized I didn't add this to them.. UV Traffic Cone Orange, UV Shocking Pink, #fbe777

Not a fade. Just a pink stripe on the tip, because... yum

Waiting for the new Dragon Tongue template, because this fade would look wonderful on that, and wouldn't need to be a split to look good :D

You need to make sure when doing this you pick bright enough colors. I did a mother of pearl tentacle and added in a pastel purple and aqua. I even thought they might have been too dark. But after getting the pearl added in and mixing it in with the base silicone, the color was completely lost. I can post the color swatch to show you what would be "too light" if you'd like.

You would definitely have to do a medium/medium-light range color. Probably like the Post-it tab set that has the pink, purple, and blue in it.

o_o
Yes, post it!
Now I'm all paranoid about my custom Clayton. I haven't ordered it yet, but now I wonder if I'll have to change it up once again... The coloring is too expensive for the color to be lost :tinfoil:
