Kinda tempted to watch the anime movie "Akira" since it has great reviews but the trailer didn't look appealing to me... at all.

Too bad- it's really good. It's a great cyberpunk film, and as an animation geek I could go on forever about how amazing the quality of animation is. If you don't mind the slow pace and like flowy, cinematic animation I say go for it.

I'll link you the video essay that convinced me to give it a watch if that sort of thing interests you.

Oh thanks! Yeah I'll probably watch it :3 It's just the "trailer" I saw on Amazon was basically just a bunch of people/things with their guts falling out and it was... surreal and creepy and not really my cup of tea :P But I'll prolly watch it for historical importance if nothing else. And I'm always down for cyberpunk.

Meanwhile last night it was "Inception".

*watches trailer*

Oh dang I see what you mean. Some people just can't make a good trailer. :stick:

Also just because it's on my mind Game Grumps animated:

Went to see Blade Runner 2049 yesterday. Hot damn is that a gorgeous movie. It's also a really long movie but the pacing is consistent enough that most probably won't care about the running time. And the music is real nice. A good tribute to Vangelis while doing enough of its own thing. Seriously, if you have the chance to go see it in an imax theatre go watch it. The visuals are just so grand! Movies like that make me wish my town had one.

y'know a lotta people said the new Berserk was bad, and for the most part it does fuck around with the story a lil' bit, but I think the fan's main gripe is the animation choice. It does that mix of cel-shaded 3d and 2d drawings that anime like Shidonia no Kishi and Ajin: Demi-Human has. Some would even say such a style doesn't really constitute 'real' anime, but I digress.

While the 3d stuff looks like it's rendered at like 20fps it's pretty decent over all and they've put the effort in and I'm a bit of a Berserk fanboy. Personally wouldn't say it's bad, that's my opinion. I had fun watching it and that's what matters to me.

Kentaro Miura may be slowing down on his development of Berserk, but I'm always keen to see what he has in store because I am so invested in the story and Guts, The Struggler is just so, so manly.

Well, I finally got to see "Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them".

Uhm... I've never been the biggest Harry Potter fan, but the films do hold a special place in my heart since I quite literally grew up alongside them (I'm 24 now) and I have read some of the books when I was younger. So I've always enjoyed the universe... but this? Hated it. To my own surprise :bugeyed:

Huh. :unamused:

So I did finally watch "Akira" and while the animation is pretty good, the story... was just bizarre. Which is fine except I couldn't feel for the characters in any way. I think it's intentionally a rather dehumanizing film and it's just like "oh someone else died horribly" and "oh she got raped and then died". Kinda senseless. And I was expecting a bit more scientific veracity since it was labeled as science fiction.

On the other hoof, I watched the 1950's Japanese classic "Seven Samurai" and OMFG! Instantly one of my top-5 favorite movies ever. I was extremely skeptical of a 3.5 hour long subtitled foreign film but the characters are brilliant. Funny, quirky, and yet serious enough when it needs to be. It had me alternately in tears and laughing out loud, and on the edge of my seat. This right here is how you make a movie. When you know in the first 15 minutes it's great. Except they don't make them like this anymore, not very often.

Like anyone who thinks they've seen the best movies ever but haven't seen "Seven Samurai", they're missing out.

Ah I can't wait to see that! The original is such an amazing movie. I'm worried (as usual) the new one can't really compare but I think I'll go see it in the theater like you say.

Occult Crimes. It's trash television but I love me some murder porn. Bonus points because 9 times out of 10 the male accomplice to the murder has a really sad 70's pornstache.
Soooo... I'm doing reviews now! http://doeadeert.tumblr.com/

Finally sat my ass down to watch Jaws. Now I want to write a parody of "Go The Fuck To Sleep" called "Close The Fucking Beach" :nomnom:

Thanks for letting us know. I've been curious about seeing it, hoping not to be disappointed. I'm a fan of the first one and the punk sci-fi genre in particular. And I wondered if they could match Vangelis in its score. I'll make a point to see it at the IMAX.

My spouse and I are slowly getting to it an episode every other night or so, as time allows. So far I'm loving it!

The VVitch. It's a pretty movie and the soundtrack is awesome, I just wish they were a little more vague about whether there is/isn't a witch, at least until the end. Five minutes in, you know what's going on. I tend to like a little mystery to stories like these. Is there a witch, or is this family very unlucky and paranoid? Nope, we don't get that. Complaints aside, I do have more to enjoy about the film to keep it in the like category.

Also some fun from Cinefix's trailer mix: The Witch as a Wes Anderson film:

But seriously parts of the movie hit me closer than it should have. Minorly, mind you, but still a knee jerk reaction. Spoilers because it related to the end of the movie.
