So I did finally watch "Akira" and while the animation is pretty good, the story... was just bizarre. Which is fine except I couldn't feel for the characters in any way. I think it's intentionally a rather dehumanizing film and it's just like "oh someone else died horribly" and "oh she got raped and then died". Kinda senseless. And I was expecting a bit more scientific veracity since it was labeled as science fiction.

On the other hoof, I watched the 1950's Japanese classic "Seven Samurai" and OMFG! Instantly one of my top-5 favorite movies ever. I was extremely skeptical of a 3.5 hour long subtitled foreign film but the characters are brilliant. Funny, quirky, and yet serious enough when it needs to be. It had me alternately in tears and laughing out loud, and on the edge of my seat. This right here is how you make a movie. When you know in the first 15 minutes it's great. Except they don't make them like this anymore, not very often.

Like anyone who thinks they've seen the best movies ever but haven't seen "Seven Samurai", they're missing out.

It's also a really long movie but the pacing is consistent enough that most probably won't care about the running time. And the music is real nice. A good tribute to Vangelis while doing enough of its own thing. Seriously, if you have the chance to go see it in an imax theatre go watch it. The visuals are just so grand! Movies like that make me wish my town had one.

Ah I can't wait to see that! The original is such an amazing movie. I'm worried (as usual) the new one can't really compare but I think I'll go see it in the theater like you say.

Occult Crimes. It's trash television but I love me some murder porn. Bonus points because 9 times out of 10 the male accomplice to the murder has a really sad 70's pornstache.

Finally sat my ass down to watch Jaws. Now I want to write a parody of "Go The Fuck To Sleep" called "Close The Fucking Beach" :nomnom:

Thanks for letting us know. I've been curious about seeing it, hoping not to be disappointed. I'm a fan of the first one and the punk sci-fi genre in particular. And I wondered if they could match Vangelis in its score. I'll make a point to see it at the IMAX.

^ glad you're planning on seeing it! It does have a few whaaaaaaaaaat moments but I can't say anymore without going into spoiler territory. Hope you enjoy it!

I finally got my folks and my SO to see the original Wicker Man. Their reactions alone were great. :stick:

My spouse and I are slowly getting to it an episode every other night or so, as time allows. So far I'm loving it!

The VVitch. It's a pretty movie and the soundtrack is awesome, I just wish they were a little more vague about whether there is/isn't a witch, at least until the end. Five minutes in, you know what's going on. I tend to like a little mystery to stories like these. Is there a witch, or is this family very unlucky and paranoid? Nope, we don't get that. Complaints aside, I do have more to enjoy about the film to keep it in the like category.

Also some fun from Cinefix's trailer mix: The Witch as a Wes Anderson film:

But seriously parts of the movie hit me closer than it should have. Minorly, mind you, but still a knee jerk reaction. Spoilers because it related to the end of the movie.

My Hero Academia. I binged season 1's dub on Hulu and I'm currently halfway through season 2. Watched the first season again because my SO wanted to see it since I talked it up so much and he wants something to fill the One Punch Man void. He loves it, but he wants to wait until the dub is out for season 2 to continue (I don't care either way, I just want to watch my shows)

Anyways, I love how varied and creative everyone's quirks are. And that there's limitations and weaknesses that everyone has to strategize around if they want to win their fight. Izuku is a cinnamon roll and I love that he earned his quirk. Plus I love the image of a smol bean like him wielding a ridonkulous amount of power. :stick:

The Soviet epic film War and Peace. This is the one where the Red Army re-enacted battle scenes and there was a cast of like 120,000 people. 4 parts totaling nearly 8 hours. Loving it so far. Haha I'm a weirdo, what can I say? :3

Prior to that it was Andrei Rubylev -- another Tarkovsky film. Discovered a free trial of a movie streaming service that has all these old classic and art films.

Got through a good bit of math today on my new laptop. I'm trying to use it every day to keep it updated and all. Anyway, I decided that since I'm sitting in the living room with it (too awkward to use at my desktop since I have a desktop on it) I would try watching something while working. Normally I don't do that too well, but it worked today. I watched Nat Geo's The Lost Fleet of Guadalcanal, which I've seen so often I have it memorized. I then watched Moonrise Kingdom (my favorite Wes Anderson film). All in all a pretty good day. I might actually do some gaming in a little bit.
