Custom Color Ideas and Information

Postby HerrAardy » Wed Feb 22, 2012 11:57 pm

I've been throwing around the idea of making a thread with information on what's doable and what looks good for custom color orders. I'd upload a lot of examples of toys I feel really look nice and make the most of ordering a custom toy.

If this thread gathers a lot of interest I'll keep it up and try to keep supplying photos of pretty/crazy surprise or custom orders. :3

I'll start with this one, a cockatrice I made a while back that I didn't happen to see ever turn up on the forum (may have just missed it) that shows a really simple, but very nice looking coloration. But really *any* coloration always looks wonderful on a cockatrice.

EDITS--

Pearly and Metallic Colors
I've seen a lot of confusion about what makes a toy pearly vs metallic, hopefully this will clear up some of that.

People seem to be confused because they're being told metallic and pearly colors are different, but staff uses the terms interchangeably. Staff uses it interchangeably because production does. The additives are different, but can be used differently to *make* them interchangeable. The pearly additives can be used to make metallic toys and the other way around. When you tell us you want a "metallic" or a "pearly" toy we make it differently, but sometimes with the same additive depending on the color/toy texture/etc.

Razor is one of the toys that can have just the shaft highlighted if requested.

I tend to really like marbles more than most fades, it seems... next one will be a fade. For now, enjoy the mint chocolate chance!

Okay, I promised a fade!

If colors are more similar (not too far from each other on the color wheel) they're easier to blend into each other. This is a cool site I found recently that lets you choose relationships between colors and see how they look next to each other: http://colorschemedesigner.com/

Normally you'd want to start with a primary color tip and go down to a secondary color, but this fade breaks the rules by being relatively easy to pull off, anyway.

Black and bright colors marbled together work really well, actually.

An example of a bright color marbled with black, showing now nifty it looks.

When you start adding glow-in-the-dark it gets questionable, though. The less pigment added to something you want to glow, the brighter it glows. Some colors can't be made so that they glow well and are still opaque enough to marble with another color... sometimes you have to pick between getting a sharp marble *or* getting it to glow brightly. Also, some colors can't be made precisely, since the glow additive adds a bit of a yellowish/greenish/creamy look.

Marbles seem to look good with metallics all of the time.

In this image you can see clear definition between the two colors used in the shaft. Because of how opaque the colors were made the glow is not the strongest, even though it is present. I unfortunately never got a photo of it glowing, it looked really neat since only the blue in the shaft was made to glow.

Split Marble - All colors are metallic, the blue in the shaft is glow-in-the-dark.

A mostly on-topic question: How are Surprise Me's usually approached? Do you just try and use whatever spare colors you have made up, or do you have a design in mind when you start? Do you guys spend time and try to be creative, or just get it done as quick as possible?

I usually try to make sure they're not black, since I see that most people on here really don't like to receive it as a surprise color. X3

I like to make them interesting in some way... a marble, highlight, or even an unusual solid color that isn't standard. Sometimes I have a particular coloration idea in mind that I want to see if it looks how I think it would; sometimes someone ordered a neat custom that I liked enough to replicate as someone else's surprise me. People who order split firmness are almost guaranteed to get something a bit cooler that a solid color since we have to pour the shaft and base separately, anyway. (Key word is almost!) I like to have fun as much as possible, since other than these I don't have much room to be creative.

Of course sometimes they do just end up being poured a solid color since we can't spend all of our time making super awesome surprise me toys non stop and neglect the folks who spent money on the naturals or customs.

How much control do you guys have over the marble? Like if I ordered a 'cowprint' style marble, you'd probably be able to do it, right?

You could always request a "Chance styled marble" in the comments box when you place your order. In my opinion it looks very similar to cowprint. :)

Purple to green (or green to purple) tend to not work out the best, but this is one I made that turned out okay.

Dolphins!

Don't see many of those around the forum, but I think they look really nice when given custom colorations.
