A simple suggestion, forum mods

Postby EquineLover95 » Mon Jan 25, 2016 6:55 am

Make users fill out a capatcha before posting a new topic, that way we wont have to keep dealing with all this spam. It's basically standard to do this sort of thing on forums anyway...

Its not a "normal" forum though.

But joking aside, i think this feuture really would make sense, even though it might not stop hardcore trolls, but at least bots.
another really cool feature would be to have support for tapatalk or a similar app or maybe a website automatiacally adapting to display size to make use on mobile platforms easier.

Might be a tiny bit annoying for the forum regulars but that's a pretty good idea

Totally unecessary. This is a once in a blue moon kind of thing that is always resolved fairly quickly. The only excuse for capcha would be so much spam that the boards fill faster than the mods can clean it.

Perhaps a "maximum new thread limit per day" cap might help? Set it higher than anyone in their right mind would reach, but low enough that there's not 25+ pages of solid spam in the new posts. This way there's no annoying/tedious filling out a captcha every new thread, and it also prevents potential trolls from unloading on the forum.

I used to be on a forum where if it was your very first post to the forum it had to go through a moderator before it would be posted. That gives the mod a chance to verify that you're a real person and not a spammer, and once they approve you there are no restrictions on your posting. A one-time inconvenience for new members, and more work for the mods, but it seemed to work.

Maybe they should have more mods? I am not exactly sure how many mods are around in general but mods that are up around that time sounds like a good idea.

The mods seem to be dealing with this very effectively and in a very timely manner, though. I pop on frequently (multiple times a day) to see if anything interesting is going on. I've seen literally zero spam posts this week and I don't remember this happening more than once before in all the time I've been lurking. I only ever know the spam has been here from seeing all the posts lamenting the tragedy. Maybe when it's an issue we could all just go have a snack and come back in a few hours? :nerdy:

It's a short-term situation that happens occasionally. Doesn't mean the spammers only hit at a single time or on a single day, just that they go away soon after they start. This is still the worst incursion so far, though. :psyduck:

I spoke too soon: for once the spam is actually happening while I'm here. I'm still willing to bet it will be gone very soon, though.

I've been on many forums in the last 20 years, and I've never seen one operate that way before. Ever. Mostly capatcha's come when creating your account, to prove you aren't a bot, but that's the extent I've seen them used. Also, this doesn't happen a lot, here. Hear me out: Yes, in the past several days this forum has been hit hard, but this is the first time I have seen spam like this, here, in a year. Usually, this forum gets a spam here and there, every couple of weeks or so, advertising kitchen supplies or whatever, but that's it. The last few days have seen the spammers at an extreme, but it has never been this bad before.

Capatchas arent really effective and can upset legit users more than spammers.

Restricting new users (under a week old or whatever) to 1 new thread a day would stop a lot of the flooding.
But it might also encourage them to just create hundreds of new users, which is a lot harder to cleanup than a deletion of one or two users entire history.

This one could be targeted by a simple forum code change to reject any title with Chinese (or whatever it is) characters in it. Or make the thread invisible to all but the creator so that they think their spam is working and dont "evolve" to defeat the changes.
In my experience when running a forum, just making some fairly minor changes to the php code so it is custom will break spambots. They cant cope with a unique version of phpBB.

The problem with mods is that mods cause drama, the professional employee mods are doing a good job managing things without drama. User mods will lead to all the usual elitism and jealousy and rubbish which always goes on.

Spammers usually move on eventually.

I haven't been around as much lately and was thinking "Wow is it this bad?" then ironically when I go back to 'new posts' there is like 5 new threads from a bot.

A forum I'm on requires the first 10 posts by any new user to be approved by a mod. Forum feature use (contacting other users, etc) are restricted until the 10 posts have been sent and approved. Worked a treat.

The origins of the bots are spreading. Now is not the time for inaction. Inflate a balloon too much and it pops. I am shocked that there are naysayers. I say crush them while the chance is good.

I'm of the opinion that I shouldn't treat the forum users the same way I would treat the spammers.

If you flag the spam, we can get rid of it faster. Just sayin' :)
